Greetings Smittyheads!

I'm back from my April hiatus. Had a nice break and loved not being on a schedule or deadline for writing, meetings etc. this past month. Really enjoyed celebrating my 40th birthday ALL MONTH. I had a couple of "surprise" gatherings that occurred and want to thank my old friends and those I work with in the community for helping celebrate this milestone birthday.

We had good April with a successful RiverRun International Film Festival and a great start to May with a record breaking crowd at Family Services "Taste of the Town" this past weekend. I don't think anyone would disagree with me saying that there were more than 500 people at the event. WOW!

A lot is going on this month. As you can see below, the next few weekends are going to be busy. Do take advantage to what is happening.

Now to the business at hand...

The Triple Threat is back!  Music in the Streets

Music in the Streets, the popular downtown music series is back for the spring and summer. After receiving at least 10 e-mails a week since late March asking me when its going to start. I think the community is past ready for the return. Everything kicks off this week on Thursday 5:00 p.m. with Flow Alive After Five at Corpening featuring U-Phonik. On Friday starting at 6:30 p.m. we move on to Allegacy Federal Credit Union Fourth Street Jazz and Blues featuring Roy Roberts and The Quest Blues Band. Saturday, to complete the first weekend series event at 7:00 is the Bob Neill Summer on Trade the Don Dixon Band.

For those of you who are new to the community and are curious as to where everyone may be doing late in the week. My bet is they are starting their weekend off right by heading downtown to listen to some great music, people watching and hooking up with friends coming out of hibernation from winter. While you're downtown, do stick around and check out the new restaurants and bars that have popped up since last fall. Music in the Streets will run through the end of September. To find out more about who's playing and other news, bookmark this site http://www.winstonsalemevents.org/ or follow the banner link below in each edition of Smitty's Notes. I'll see you on the streets downtown!

Athena Greek Taverna Opening Soon!

Ever wondered with a number of Greek own restaurants in the community like diners, seafood and BBQ places. Why there isn't an eatery that serves only traditional Greek dishes? That's about to change.  A new ethnic restaurant is opening in the next couple of weeks and you're going to love it. Athena Greek Taverna is located 680 S. Stratford Road (next to the Hanes Knitwear Plant). This authentic Greek restaurant is being opened by a couple Yiannis and Sophie Vgenopoulos. Yiannis is a native of Athens, Greece who immigrated to North Carolina in 2000. Sophie grew up here in Forsyth County who's family has been in the restaurant business for years. What prompted their investment in a new establishment? It was time for Winston-Salem to a eatery that served only traditional Greek dishes.

Some of the entrees you can expect on the menu includes lamb, chicken and sausages dishes prepared in various styles. Seafood appetizers and entrees will feature interesting items like calamari and something you don't see on any menu in most local restaurants - octopus. Other entrees include Pastichio (Greek style lasagna) Moussaka (egg plant and ground sirloin), Souvlaki, Gyros and Spankopita. All dishes will be served with either lemon flavored potatoes or rice. Vegetarian entrees are available. The entire menu is in Greek with the English translation below each food item. Athena's will seat 80 patrons and will sell beer and only Greek wines. Additionally, they plan to have live music each Tuesday night with a musician playing tunes on a Bouzouki - a traditional eight string Greek instrument. As a fan of Greek food and having traveled there myself, I excited that we are getting an restaurant serving strictly traditional dishes. Athena Greek Taverna will be open Monday-Saturday 10:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m. For more information call 794-3069.

Crisis Control Ministry 14th annual Hope du Jour - Tuesday, May 4th.

On May 4th more than 200 participating restaurants will donate 10% of their sales from breakfast, lunch and dinner to help fight hunger in Forsyth County. The money will be used by Crisis Control's food room to ensure that the hungry can be fed. Proceeds purchase perishable foods such as milk, orange juice, bread, butter, hamburger meat, and chicken-items not ordinarily donated through local food drives. It is a wonderful event to help a good cause.

Sponsors for the Winston-Salem event include The Winston-Salem Journal, Southern Community Bank and Trust, and T.W. Garner Food Company (Texas Pete). Crisis Control Ministry has also introduced a new element to this year’s event. Local artists paired with participating restaurants to create a series of “chair” art pieces to help promote Hope du Jour. These 20 chairs, each displayed in a corresponding restaurant, are available for a minimum of $200 each.. Hope du Jour restaurant partners will be listed in event advertising in The Winston-Salem Journal on Tuesday. A list of the participating restaurants, sponsors and view chair art, visit their web site, http://www.crisiscontrol.org/ For more information about Hope du Jour, please call 724-7875 ext. 1040.

Greek Festival 2004

On May 14, 15, and 16, the Greek community is inviting everyone to their "Annual Greek Festival" at the Greek Orthodox Church (435 Keating Drive, off of Country Club & Silas Crk Pkwy.) An obvious play off the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," here's what's on tap for the weekend: plenty o' Greek dancing, informative tours of the beautiful church, and shopping at the Agora (Market Place) where you can purchase arts, crafts and other goodies. Speaking of goodies, the most important part of the festival in my opinion is the F-O-O-D. And plenty of it! Gyros, moussaka, pastitsio, souvlaki and my favorite-spanakopita!

Every year, the festival reminds me of my own trip to Greece a few years ago, where I acquired the taste of Ouzo (a popular Greek liqueur). To this day, I still have flashbacks of a wicked afternoon with some other Americans trying to out-drink some locals at one of the tavernas on the island of Mykonos. A HUGE mistake. Lesson learned. The festival hours on Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $1.00. You can also call in take-out orders from the event. Telephone: 765-FOOD
(3663). Additional Info: Call 765-7145 or web site at www.wsgoc.org/greekfst/greekfst.html

Third Annual Yadkin Valley Wine Festival - Elkin, North Carolina

For you Triad wine lovers, time to head to the hills for the Third Annual Yadkin Valley Wine Festival (Elkin Municipal Park) in Elkin, North Carolina on Saturday, May 15 11 .a.m. - 6 p.m. Thirteen vineyards along the Yadkin Valley will be in attendance giving you an opportunity to taste what has come off their vines in the past year. The festival is free and open to the public, including families with children. Music this year will feature Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Mel Jones and His Bag of Bones and Mixed Emotions. A little factoid - The Yadkin Valley was designated in February 2003 as a American Viticultural Area (AVA) which means it's a distinct grape growing region. We share this distinction with the NAPA Valley in California. Something to be proud of for the area. Wine tasters must be at least 21 years of age to obtain a tasting wristband. Food will be available for purchase. No pets or outside food or beverages are permitted. Tickets for wine tasting are $10. In
advance $15. at gate. Info: 336-526-1111 Web site http://www.yvwf.com/ Directions: Take I-40 West to I-77 North to Exit 82
